![]() The 4-star Plaza Madeleine & Spa offers modern rooms in a traditional building, and a swimming pool, right at the edge of the old city walls, just steps from the center. Only two minutes' stroll (140 meters) from the central Place de la Liberté and the Office de Tourisme in the very heart of Sarlat's historic district, Les Suites Sarladaises are in the perfect location for getting to know the town, its sights, markets and restaurants. The owners of Suites Sarladaises live in the building and are always available for help and guidance. Each is furnished in a distinctive period style. Two have full kitchens, two others kitchenettes. Redesigned in the 1600s for the family of a prominent royal magistrate, and again recently to receive guests, it offers five suites with historic ambience and modern comforts. The name of this splendid collection of five spacious self-catering apartments/flats translates as "Sarlat Suites," but this gives you no idea of the elegance and fine taste you'll encounter in this medieval Sarlat townhouse known historically as the Hôtel de Leydis. Mostgeneral food shops are on the outskirts of the medieval town. If you're renting a flat, note that market days in Sarlat are Wednesday and Saturday, so plan to stock up on all the culinary treats of the region on those days. Some Sarlat hotels in the center do not have vehicular access, so if you arrive by car, plan to park just outside the center and tote your luggage or make arrangements for pick-up by your hotel. Many more are scattered on the outskirts and in the countryside beyond. The most congenial and convenient place to stay is right in the small medieval center of Sarlat, but-because it is small-there are only a few lodging-places.
